Tide Pools – Learn About What You See

tidepoolLincoln City will be offering “clinics” about the creatures that you may find when you are exploring the tide pools in the area.   Periodically from March thru July, you can join Dr. Chuck at the 15th Street Beach Access where he will provide a brief lecture and then take you on a tour of the tidepools where you can see sea creatures like starfish, anemones, crabs.   Each of the clinics will last about 2 hours.

Make sure you bring some gloves, and depending on weather you may want raingear and sunscreen as well.   It’s also nice to have rubber boots to trudge around in the water.

IMAG0461If you are like me when you make a trip to the Oregon Coast you take a ton of pictures.  Did you know that Coast Weekend has an annual photo contest and they are currently accepting submissions for 2015?   You need to hurry though because the submission deadline is December 13th at 11:59 pm.  They will accept all subjects and are welcoming all expertise levels from photographers that reside in Washington or Oregon state.  You can submit print or digital media, and it can be traditional image or artistically enhanced.   There will be gift card/certificate prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as well as People’s Choice.   You can find submission guidelines and contest rules at the contest website.  Submit those entries and let us know that you did so those of us that are part of Lincoln City Beach Retreats can vote during the voting period (December 14th – 20th).    Good Luck to all!

The Whales are Coming!!!

whalespoutLater in December and Early January is a great time for whale watching on the Oregon Coast.  This is typically when the numbers are highest during the whale migration. (again in March and April)  For the guests of Lincoln City Beach Retreats you will be able to sit right at the window, grab those binoculars and watch to your heart’s content.   The easiest way to spot them is to watch for the spray of water from their blowhole.  This is best when the sea is calm and you don’t have a lot of white caps.   Once you know their location you can then focus your binoculars in the general vicinity  for a closer view.   If you would prefer a more up close experience I might suggest taking a short trip down to Depoe Bay (10 miles south on 101) and booking a trip on a whale watching boat.

All along the coast during the height of the migration (December 27-31, March 19-26) you will find “Whale Watching Spoken Here” sites (map) with volunteers that can help you observe this natural phenomenon.  This program is sponsored by Oregon State Parks.  Locations with guides close to Lincoln City include the Inn at Spanish Head and Boiler Bay Scenic Viewpoint.

What are you waiting for… Book your visit to the Oregon Coast for a Whale of a time!
